AMELIA, FEMI MAURA. 2025. The Students Ability in Translating Indonesian Narrative Text Into English at The Eleventh Grade of SMA Muhammadiyah Tenggarong in Academic Year 2024/2025. Thesis. Department of English Education. Faculty of Teacher Education and Training. Tenggarong: University of Kutai Kartanegara. This research was conducted due to students’ challenges in translating Indonesian narrative texts into English. Translation is essential in language learning, yet many eleventh-grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah Tenggarong face difficulties in producing accurate, acceptable, and readable translations. These are mostly caused by limited vocabulary, weak grammar, and a lack of understanding of translation techniques. This study focused on two research questions: (1) How is the students’ ability in translating Indonesian narrative text into English of the eleventh grade of SMA Muhammadiyah Tenggarong in academic year 2024/2025? and (2) How is the score distribution of students’ ability in translating Indonesian narrative text into English of the eleventh grade of SMA Muhammadiyah Tenggarong in academic year 2024/2025? The purposes of this study were to describe the students’ translation ability and to analyze the score distribution among the students. This research applied descriptive quantitative design. The population consisted of all eleventh-grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah Tenggarong in the academic year 2024/2025, with a total sample of 11 students. The research instrument used was a translation test consisting of a 14-sentence Indonesian narrative text titled Legenda Laut Hitam. The translations were assessed by two scorers using a 3-point Likert scale for accuracy, acceptability, and readability. Data analysis involved mean score and rate percentage, with classification based on Norm-Referenced Criteria. The findings of the research are as follows: (1) The students’ ability in translating Indonesian narrative text into English was fair, with the mean score of 80.00; (2) The score distribution of the students’ ability in translating Indonesian narrative text was: 1 student or 9.09% got A (Excellent), 3 students or 27.27% got B (Good), 4 students or 36.36% got C (Fair), 3 students or 27.27% got D (Poor), and no student or 0% got E (Very Poor). These findings indicate that while some students performed well, overall improvement is still needed, especially in the aspects of clarity and naturalness. Teachers are encouraged to provide regular translation practice, give more attention to grammar and context, and implement peer-assessment to enhance students’ translation skills.
